We propose a strategic partnership with the Wikimedia Foundation to support and expand Wikimedia’s global efforts in advancing free knowledge, community-led initiatives, and digital equity across South Africa and the broader African continent.

2. Background

The Wikimedia Foundation has established itself as a pillar of open knowledge, primarily through its flagship project, Wikipedia, and a suite of related platforms. Its support for community-led, open-access educational programs fosters digital inclusion and equitable information access — a cause Neftaly is deeply committed to within our local context.

Neftaly has successfully implemented numerous community education and digital literacy programs, targeting underserved populations and creating sustainable pathways to education and employment through practical skills and accessible digital resources.

3. Objectives

To collaborate with Wikimedia Foundation in promoting free access to educational knowledge and digital literacy across South Africa and Africa.
To co-develop and implement open-access, community-led initiatives that empower marginalized communities through information equity.
To integrate Wikimedia resources and tools into Neftaly’s training programs, expanding digital inclusion and enhancing educational outcomes.
To support the localization and contextualization of Wikimedia content for diverse African languages and cultures.

4. Proposed Activities

Digital Literacy Workshops: Conduct joint workshops utilizing Wikimedia’s platforms to teach digital research skills, content creation, and knowledge sharing.
Content Localization Projects: Collaborate with local communities to translate and adapt Wikimedia content into regional languages, fostering inclusivity.
Community Engagement: Support local Wikimedia chapters and user groups by providing capacity-building and resource mobilization.
Open Educational Resources (OER) Integration: Embed Wikimedia’s free content within Neftaly’s educational curricula and training materials.
