Neftaly Equips SACAP Interns to Co-Design Emotional Wellness Apps

Empowering future mental health professionals through tech innovation and co-creation

In an inspiring move to bridge the gap between emotional wellness and technology, Neftaly has partnered with interns from the South African College of Applied Psychology (SACAP) to co-design a new wave of digital tools that promote mental health and emotional well-being.

Through this hands-on collaboration, SACAP interns—many of whom are pursuing careers in psychology, counselling, and social work—are gaining valuable experience in the design and development of mobile and web-based wellness apps. The initiative aims to empower young professionals to think innovatively about accessible mental health interventions, especially for underserved communities.

“Many mental health apps are built without direct input from those who understand the lived realities of clients,” says a Neftaly spokesperson. “By bringing SACAP interns into the design process, we ensure that these tools are grounded in real-life needs and clinical insight.”

Interns are involved in every stage of the design process, from ideation and user research to prototype testing and feedback collection. The apps focus on key areas such as stress management, emotional resilience, peer support, and daily mental wellness check-ins—tailored for local languages and cultural contexts.

This collaborative programme not only boosts digital literacy and innovation skills among emerging mental health professionals, but also aligns with Neftaly’s mission to democratise access to emotional wellness support.

“Our goal is to develop tools with people, not just for them,” says a SACAP intern involved in the project. “We’re learning how to design tech that speaks to people’s emotions, culture, and everyday realities.”

With the rising demand for mental health services across Africa, this partnership serves as a model for integrating psychological insight into tech innovation—co-creating wellness solutions that are both scalable and deeply human-centered.
