Esteemed Colleagues, Healthcare Champions, Neftaly Family, Distinguished Guests, and Fellow Citizens,

Good day.

It is a deep honour to stand before you today on Neftaly’s 2025 National Healthcare Decisions Day, a day that speaks not only to systems and services, but to human dignity, voice, and choice.

As the Chief Human Capital Officer at Neftaly, my work focuses on what is often called our greatest asset — our people. But today I want to go further: our people are not just an asset. They are the heartbeat of this organisation and of every healthcare decision that matters.

Healthcare decisions are not made by machines or policies. They are made by human beings — patients, families, doctors, nurses, caregivers, and public servants. And behind each of those decisions is a world of emotion, belief, culture, and hope.

Our job in Human Capital is to ensure that the people within Neftaly — and the broader systems we support — are equipped, trained, respected, and empowered to help others make informed healthcare choices.

This means:

• Recruiting professionals who understand and value patient autonomy
• Training staff in cultural competence and ethical care
• Supporting emotional intelligence in healthcare delivery
• Building workplaces that allow caregivers and healthcare workers to reflect, learn, and grow
• And promoting a workforce culture that sees every patient not as a case, but as a person

At Neftaly, our 2025 Human Capital strategy has centred around empowerment and humanity — ensuring our teams not only understand the technical aspects of healthcare, but the relational and emotional dimensions that make decision-making possible.

Because when a mother chooses treatment for her child, when an elder outlines their wishes for end-of-life care, when a young adult seeks mental health support — the human response matters. Compassion matters. Listening matters. Respect matters.

Today, I ask every manager, HR professional, health leader, and caregiver across the country to ask themselves:

• Are we hiring and training for empathy?
• Are we building systems where staff can truly connect with patients?
• Are we valuing the human beings behind the decisions we support?

Let this day be a reminder that healthcare is not just about science — it is about relationships. It is about people helping people make some of the most personal decisions of their lives.

National Healthcare Decisions Day isn’t only about encouraging individuals to make decisions about their health — it is also about holding ourselves, as institutions, accountable for creating the systems, knowledge, and environments where those decisions are possible and respected.

At Neftaly, we believe that:

• Learning drives change. We learn from data, from communities, and from the stories of those whose healthcare decisions were respected — and those whose decisions were ignored.
• Monitoring builds trust. It allows us to see where gaps exist — in service delivery, in communication, in support systems — and to correct course before people fall through those cracks.
• Evaluation inspires progress. It helps us move from assumptions to evidence and from intention to measurable impact.

In 2025, our work has focused on:

• Monitoring how people access healthcare information and whether it leads to confident decision-making
• Tracking the inclusion of patient voices in health planning and delivery
• Evaluating training programmes for healthcare workers on respecting patient autonomy
• And building feedback systems so that our communities are not just recipients of healthcare — but active participants in shaping it

This year, Neftaly has launched several new community-based learning and monitoring initiatives that give real people the power to speak up, share their experience, and co-create solutions that reflect their values and needs.

Because healthcare decisions are not made in isolation — they are shaped by culture, access, language, literacy, and trust. And unless we learn from real-life contexts, our systems risk failing the very people they are designed to serve.

Today, I call on all sectors to:

• Invest in learning, not just teaching
• Monitor not just numbers, but human experiences
• And evaluate not only outcomes, but also respect for dignity and choice

Let us make healthcare not just a service, but a shared learning journey — one where everyone’s decision is informed, heard, and honoured.

• Training for professionals to respect and uphold patient choices
• And community-based research and outreach, which ensures no one is left behind

At Neftaly, we see healthcare not as a cost to be managed but as a value to be protected. Every investment we make in preventive care, decision-support education, and ethical health planning reduces long-term healthcare costs, improves lives, and strengthens our social fabric.

In 2025, our financial strategy has been aligned with this principle — to fund not just treatment, but empowerment. To not only manage budgets but to mobilise resources equitably and sustainably.

We have worked closely with our partners to develop budgeting frameworks that support patient-centered care, and to ensure that every rand spent contributes to dignity, autonomy, and access. This is financial leadership with purpose.

I want to take this opportunity to thank our healthcare partners, our donor networks, and our internal teams for their continued commitment to putting people first — not just in policy, but in funding, planning, and delivery.

As the Chief Research Officer of Neftaly, I stand here with a deep sense of responsibility and purpose. Today is not just about awareness — it is about evidence, ethics, and empowerment. Healthcare decisions are some of the most personal and impactful choices we make — yet for many, they are clouded by uncertainty, misinformation, or lack of access to reliable data. This is where research becomes not just useful — but essential.

At Neftaly, we believe that sound decisions require sound information. That is why our research efforts in 2025 have focused on:

• Collecting and analysing community health data to identify gaps in knowledge and care
• Studying patient behaviours and cultural attitudes around advance care planning
• Evaluating the effectiveness of health education campaigns across different demographics
• And developing user-friendly tools and materials that help people make informed, values-based choices about their health

We do this not to sit on shelves or fill reports, but to translate research into action, and action into better health outcomes for everyone — regardless of income, education, or geography.

This year, our findings have shown a significant increase in people seeking clarity on their healthcare rights, asking about living wills, and participating in end-of-life care planning workshops. That is not just progress — it’s transformation.

But we are not there yet.

Too many still do not know their options. Too many fear the systems meant to help them. And too many are left out of the decision-making process because their voices are not being heard or studied.

That is why Neftaly’s research division remains committed to community-led inquiry, inclusive data collection, and evidence-based advocacy. We work hand-in-hand with healthcare providers, civil society, universities, and our own communities to ensure our work reflects real experiences and real needs.

Let today be a call to action — not only to make our own healthcare decisions, but to demand a system that supports everyone in doing the same.
